Cascina Costanato

Cascina Costanato farms about one hectare of hillside in Castelnuovo Calcea, in the province of Asti, at the heart of the Barbera d’Asti DOCG area, almost entirely under vine, with plantings dating back more than 30 years. In 2012 the vineyard was replanted, again with Barbera and partly with Merlot and Chardonnay, to broaden the range. Now at its full potential, the vineyard was designed and built with modern materials and methods while keeping the farming traditions of the past.

Vineyard work, then as now, fully respects agricultural tradition. Winter pruning, spring tying, treatments, thinning and finally the harvest into small crates are all done by hand.

From these grapes come "Anteprima", a Barbera d’Asti DOCG that is the estate's calling card and a symbol of the winegrowing tradition of Piedmont and Asti; "Sybélia", a Barbera d’Asti Superiore aged in 225-litre oak barriques and made only in particularly good vintages; and "Preie", a Monferrato Rosso from Barbera and Merlot.

Plans for the future include a single-varietal Merlot, a Merlot–Barbera blend and "Lo Scricciolo", a Monferrato Bianco from Chardonnay.
