In Barbera d'Asti, Superiore is not a marketing adjective: it is a designation in the production rules, requiring lower yields and at least fourteen months' ageing, six of them in wood.
100% Barbera from selected grapes. Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG, 2017 vintage, 14% vol.
Intense ruby red with restrained purple reflections, turning garnet with age. The nose shows intense vinosity, heady and ethereal, with dominant fruit of cherry, liquorice, plum, violet and blackberry. The palate is tannic, full-bodied, dry and astringent, persistent, with well-balanced acidity.
The Barbera that stands up to a braise, not the one that merely accompanies it.
Recommended pairings: roasts, red meats in general and carpaccio, game, medium-aged cheeses, and substantial first courses such as risotto and polenta.
