Valtellina Superiore: Nebbiolo grown on the Rhaetian terraces, dry-stone walls built by hand on slopes that make any mechanisation impossible.
Pure Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca), with over-ripening of the grapes to heighten aroma and structure. 2012 vintage, 12.5% vol.
Appropriately intense ruby red, showing slight tile reflections with time. The nose gives clear notes of ripe red fruit — cherry and plum — with fleeting hints of fresh hay and, more faintly, vanilla. The palate has wide softness and roundness, accompanied by a firm, fleshy structure, with red fruit still to the fore.
A mountain Nebbiolo arrived at exactly the right point.
Recommended pairings: white meats cooked in various ways, red meats including substantial ones, and hearty first courses — risotto, pastasciutta, polenta.
